Dan Borge, Director

Biography

Dan Borge, a director in LECG’s New York office, was the principal designer of the first enterprise risk management system, Bankers Trust’s risk adjusted return on capital (RAROC), which became the model for the financial services industry. RAROC enabled the development of new ways of doing business that greatly increased revenues and profits for Bankers Trust. For example, RAROC influenced product design, lending policies, trading and investment strategies; strategic planning, capital attribution, transfer pricing and business performance measurement.

Dan was a senior managing director and partner at Bankers Trust where his principal activities included working with the chairman and board of directors on risk management and corporate strategy. Dan also held positions which included head of corporate strategy; head of global research; co-head of the asset/liability committee; and a member of the business council (the top policy-making body for the bank).

As a senior advisor to a leading management consulting firm and to a business intelligence firm, Dan’s accomplishments included: designing a risk-based approach to strategic planning; developing a framework for assessing and responding to the business and financial risks posed by a possible pandemic; developing a method for incorporating business intelligence into an early warning and assessment system for emerging business risks. Dan also worked with Charles Bralver, a founding partner of Oliver Wyman, re-conceptualizing the role of the chief financial officer(CFO) in light of intense pressures from the capital markets. This provided the basis for a new approach to corporate clients and resulted in the forthcoming paper Managing Increased Capital Markets Intensity: The CFO's Role in Navigating the Known, the Unknown, and the Unknowable.

Dan is the author of several publications including the The Book of Risk, published by John Wiley & Son and Co-author, with Charles Sanford, of The Risk Management Revolution, published in Proceedings of Symposia in Pure Mathematics. Recent articles include How to Ease Our Stress (Testing) published in Investment Dealer's Digest on March 27, 2009; A Return to Credibility, published in Risk Magazine, June 2009; and Boards: Consider Risk When Determining Compensation in Directorship, September 2009. He has been quoted widely the business press in such publications as ABA Banking Journal, ABA Directors Briefing and Markets Media.

In addition, Dan has been an invited speaker at risk management conferences at the Wharton School and the University of Toronto.
