Biography
Laura D'Andrea Tyson, who returned to the University of California, Berkeley in 1997 to accept an endowed chair as professor of economics and business administration, specializes in economic policy and strategy. From 1993 to 1996, Dr Tyson served with cabinet rank in the first Clinton administration, first as chair of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, then as national economic advisor to the president and chair of the National Economic Council. Prior to her White House service, Dr Tyson was director of the University of California, Berkeley's Institute of International Studies and director of research at the Berkeley Roundtable on the International Economy. She has been a visiting scholar at the Institute of International Economics and visiting professor at Harvard Business School and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In addition, she has served on presidential commissions addressing industrial competitiveness and has frequently consulted for private industrial and financial companies, industry associations, and other government task forces and agencies. A summa cum laude graduate of Smith College, Dr Tyson earned her PhD in economics at MIT. Among her extensive economic and policy publications, she has authored three books and co-authored seven others, addressing such diverse subjects as economic development and competitiveness, international trade, education, employment, health care, and emerging market economies in central Europe and Asia. Since completing her White House service, Dr Tyson has been named director or trustee of several major corporations and non-profit institutions.
